With other members of Park City Leadership Class IV, Cheryl Fox was one of the original founders of Conserving Our Open Lands (COOL) in 1998, which later became the Summit Land Conservancy. She served as its first Executive Director but "retired" in 2000 to attempt a career as a stay-at-home mom. By 2002, it had become apparent that this wasn't quite the right fit, so she rejoined the Board and soon returned to a staff position as a part-time fund raiser. In 2006 she again become the Executive Director of what had now become the Summit Land Conservancy.
The Summit Land Conservancy was the first land trust in Utah achieve accreditation from the national Land Trust Accreditation Commission in 2011. It has now raised millions of dollars for land conservation here in Summit County and protects over 3,000 acres of the community's most cherished open spaces.
Cheryl graduated Phi Beta Kappa and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Southern California with a double major in History and French. Her MA in British Literature from the University of California, Berkeley focused on the writings of James Joyce and the Early Modernists. Between college and grad school she worked in the World Trade Center in New York City for Moccata Metals, a commodities company, and when she turned down a job offer on the trading desk, decided to spend a winter teaching skiing. That job, evidently, was a good fit, because she's just finished her 30th year as an instructor at Deer Valley.
