La Société Deux Magots (LSDM) is a non-partisan ROMEO (retired old men eating out) group. We meet daily, at 7:00 AM. Prior to COVID we met at Wasatch Bagel in Park City, UT. We now meet Fridays at Wasatch Bagel, and other days on Zoom.
We have individuals present topics to our group, with up to 20 different presentations in a month. We have moved to Zoom for these presentations. We have found that this format allows for much wider access to speakers and a much wider audience. Both can be (and have been) worldwide.
LSDM members are the rightful heirs of a group of intellectuals who met daily at Café Deux Magots, in Paris, France in the 1930's.
Les Deux Magots was founded in Paris in 1812 as a fabric and novelty shop. The name was taken from a popular play of the time, Les Deux Magots de la Chine (Two Figurines from China).
In 1873 the shop moved to its current location on Saint-Germain-des-Prés, in the 6th arrondissement of Paris. In 1884 the business changed to a café, keeping its famous name. The cafe website is available here.
In the 1930's this area and cafe were the center of the existentialist movement associated with Jean-Paul Sartre and Simone de Beauvoir. They, along with Hemingway, Camus and others would meet at Les Deux Magots, cogitating on the issues of the day.
